Motor Aspects for Writing
- The writing process for a child can be a complex problem-solving activity that involves thinking, planning, and decision making. Children who have disabilities may find writing extremely challenging and difficult.
-Writing is simply not moving your pen from left to write and leaving meaningful marks on a page; Writing involves forming letters correctly, forming them quickly, and aligning them properly on paper
-Assistive Technology can assist a student with writing in many ways. Students may require something as simple as a pencil grip while others need a device such as alternate software programs. Here are some examples of assistive technology for students.
Low Tech Tools: Low tech tools may be all that a student needs, or they may be just one part of the solution for handwriting difficulties. Low tech items can improve their ability to manipulate a pencil and write legibly
*Pencil grips- can help a student control the pencil better and could help a child out immensely if he/she is having issues with writing because of not being
able to hold a pen or pencil properly.
*Slant Board- The slant of the board allows the student to be able to see the paper that they are writing on and is used for students that have visual and perception problems
*Also paper of different colors or with raised lines can significantly help a child during the writing process.
Mid Tech Tools
*Label maker – all different types of keyboards help students quickly type and print without the use of a computer
*Portable key board - It makes it easier to see with the bigger print and can also have specific keys for the needs of each student.
*Dry-erase Board- The student might find that writing on a dry erase board is easier than writing on paper with a pen or pencil. The dry erase board does not require as much pressure as a pen does to print something so therefor a child that has issues with their fine motor skills might find this solution more helpful.
